Colonial Brown Bread

Total Time: 1 hr 20 mins Preparation Time: 30 mins Cook Time: 50 mins

Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour or 2 3/4 cups unbleached flour
  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups buttermilk (to substitute for buttermilk, use 1/4 cup vinegar or lemon juice plus milk to make 4 cups)

Recipe

  • 1 preheat oven to 350°f.
  • 2 grease two 9x5 inch loaf pans.
  • 3 in large bowl combine all the dry ingredients.
  • 4 mix well, until thoroughly combined.
  • 5 slowly add buttermilk to bowl, stirring until well blended.
  • 6 pour into loaf pans.
  • 7 bake for 50 minutes, or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean.
  • 8 remove from pans immediately and cool on wire rack.
